Stress as a risk factor of public health and the spread of pernicious habits
Abstract
Stress is one of the key risk factors of the development of serious diseases including neurological disorders, hypertension, coronary heart disease, borderline mental disorders. The purpose of this article was the analysis of the impact of stressful situations on health and of the spread of pernicious habits among the population. The information base of the study was the data of the sociological monitoring of the physical health of the Vologda Oblast population, conducted by VolSC RAS. During the analysis it was found that respondents who were rarely subjected to stress or who weren’t felt it at all, often give positive marks to their own health, whereas the largest proportion of negative health assessments was found among people who regularly experience stressful situations. In addition, people who are most susceptible to stress, compared with those who have hardly ever been confronted with stressful situations, often suffered from mild ailments and severe ailments during the year. Although an analysis of survey data did not reveal a direct relationship between the frequency of exposure to stress and the spread of pernicious habits, comparing the frequency of stressful situations experienced with the frequency of alcohol use, it was found that among respondents who were constantly experiencing stress, compared with those who rarely felt it or did not feel it at all, there were significantly more people who consume beer and spirits daily or on weekends using unfortified or fortified wines. At the same time, among people who have only occasionally been subjected to stressful situations or who have not experienced them at all, the refusal to use most of the above types of alcoholic beverages, with the exception of strong alcohol, is more common. A similar pattern with the frequency of smoking was not revealed, due to the prevalence of other motives among smokers, for example, the developed habit.

An author should not normally publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in multiple journals or publication venues. Such redundant publication is generally considered to constitute unethical publishing behavior, and if discovered may result in a manuscript under consideration being rejected, or a published article being retracted.
Authors of manuscripts reporting on original research should present an accurate account of the work performed, accompanied by an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the manuscript. The manuscript should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. The fabrication of results and the making of fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and may be cause for rejection or retraction of a manuscript or published article.
